  • Email re-engagement strategies ahead of Black Friday

Someone who finished your beginner course and someone who forgot they downloaded your checklist shouldn’t automatically receive the same “Still interested?” email. Before Black Friday, it’s worth finding out what has changed for each of them.

In this episode, I share re-engagement and win-back examples from two research inboxes and explains how course creators can use similar approaches to learn what their subscribers need now.

We look at a two-email permission sequence, a former-member return offer, the limits of coupon clicks, and questions that help you segment subscribers by their current situation. You’ll also hear why a smaller promotional audience can be a more considered choice than sending to every address you’ve collected.

IN THIS EPISODE:

18:00 — What a coupon click does—and doesn’t—tell you

21:00 — Preferences, assessments, and other ways to reconnect

26:00 — When subscribers outgrow your topic

27:00 — Building a sequence and handling nonresponders

30:00 — Revive Your Email List and your next step

Here’s a preview

1. A useful resource gives people a reason to respond

The first email gave me something relevant before the sender asked for a clear decision about staying subscribed. In the episode, I walk through the sequence and the distinction between an invitation to engage and a permission check.

2. Former students bring a different history

A platform I’d previously paid for invited me back with content and a return offer. For course creators, that raises a useful question: are you acknowledging what someone already bought, or treating them like a brand-new lead?

3. A better question can change your Black Friday segments

Someone who joined your list to launch their first course may have launched, paused, or changed direction by now. Asking where they are gives you information you can use to decide which offer fits them.

4. The reason for the click matters

A coupon response and a newsletter preference answer different questions. I share a $5 coupon example and explain why the action you request should match what you’re trying to find out.

5. Your topic may no longer fit

When I worked on marketing for a luxury bridal brand, some subscribers had already had their weddings. Before sending another “we miss you” email, it’s worth checking whether the problem that brought someone to your list still exists.

Before you increase your Black Friday sends, give people a chance to tell you what they need now. Their answers can make your offer more relevant—and help you decide who should receive the campaign.
